For several years now, it has been clear that exercise can modify fall risk factors such as decreased muscle strength, reduced speed, and poor balance in older people. Not all exercise interventions have been shown to decrease falls; however, those with a balance component do tend to be effective compared to resistance, endurance or flexibility training.
Dr. Pamela “Pommy” Macfarlane will conduct a free interactive workshop in Freeport addressing balance, exercise, and how to prevent falls. This workshop will teach the importance of balance and how it helps people live their lives well into old age.
In August, 2009, Dr. Macfarlane delivered her first Balance Matters session in Freeport. Due to the overwhelming response, Freeport Home Medical Equipment, Highland Community College/RSVP, Senior Resource Center, FHN, and Freeport Community Foundation have invited Pommy back for another round of Balance Matters.
